Support Groups

Offering encouragement and hope to heart patients, families and caregivers

Mended Hearts

Mended Hearts is the name of our support group for cardiac patients. The sponsor of our support group, Mended Hearts Long Island, is affiliated with Mended Hearts, Inc. (MHI), a national organization dedicated to providing support and inspiring hope in cardiac patients and their families. Click here to visit the website of Mended Hearts Long Island.

"We enjoy listening to visiting speakers, have light refreshments, and have conversations with each other for support and friendship. Caregivers are heartily welcome to come to each meeting. After each meeting, there is time for one-on-one discussions with members of the group to continue the support that we offer."

Who can attend, and what can I expect at support group meetings?
Open-heart patients, their family members, and caregivers are invited to attend this free support group. The group also welcomes patients with other types of heart disorders. During the meetings, participants will hear information on a variety of subject areas, including diet, exercise, cholesterol information, and specifics about heart disorders and other heart-related issues.

How do I join the program?
The Mended Hearts group meets from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm on the third Sunday of each month, except during the months of July and August. The meetings are held at the Heart Institute, in the comfortable conference room.

ICD Support Group

The ICD Support Group, held at the Stony Brook Heart Institute, is an open support group for patients who have ICD's (implantable/internal cardioverter defibrillators) and their families. This group's purpose is to provide educational and emotional support. Through open dialogue and the group's support, these patients learn to deal with having an ICD, and gain a better insight into their lives with an ICD. There are many physical and emotional barriers that are unique to the ICD recipient. The group provides the support needed to deal with this life-altering life-saving device.

Who can attend, and what can I expect at support group meetings?
Anyone can attend, and family support is recommended and welcome. During the meeting, the first hour is dedicated to a variety of educational topics for cardiac patients, including the do's and don'ts of having an ICD, cardiac medications, exercise, and so forth. The second hour is held in traditional support-group fashion, addressing the fears that most recipients of ICD's face. Heart healthy refreshments are served, and parking will be validated.

How do I join the program?
The group meets quarterly in the evening from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm in the Heart Institute Conference Room. Flyers with the date, time, location, and educational topic will be sent to all patients who have received an ICD within the past year. Additionally, if a provider feels that a patient will benefit, a flyer may be sent to that patient.

To find out the next quarter's dates and topics, contact Terry Leonard, RN, at (631) 444-3322.
